Crushed Limestone

local stone that is crushed and graded and available in different aggregate sizes. The gravel is a strong white/grey colour and is very popular as decorative inorganic mulch. It also makes an excellent driveway mix as being a crushed stone it sets well when compacted. Available in bags or bulk only from Living Earth Supplies.

Local River Gravel mix

graded or ungraded. This is the mix we use in the nursery display area. I love it as it has the colours of our landscape in it. browns, tans, greys and everything in between. We have it both ungraded and graded. The graded mix is better around the house as it has a larger stone size which doesn't catch in the soles of shoes. Whilst these gravels don't compact as much as the crushed products provided they aren't laid too deep they will 'set' quite nicely. I have used old carpet underneath this gravel very successfully to cover concrete pathways and suppress suckers and weeds.

Crushed Dolomite

again a local product that is similar in style to the crushed limestone. This is a mix of light tan/brown colours. With the larger aggregate size it is not an ideal gravel to walk on but lovely as a decorative mulch.

Cypress wood chips

Cypress is said to be 'termite resistant' apparently they don't like the taste. Although without the nitrogen benefits of Lucerne hay, these chips will help conserve moisture in the soil for plants and beneficial micro-organisms. A much healthier option for your soil than leaving it bare.

Mushroom compost

We have clients who swear by this, they use nothing else and they order it by the truck load! Interestingly some of these clients grow mainly ornamentals and some grow mainly natives. This product is not a compost in the true sense as it is the material gathered by mushroom farmers to grow their mushrooms in. Once the mushrooms have been picked, this is the waste product left behind. Generally speaking it is a mixture of straw (carbon based) with animal manures (nitrogen). Care must be taken when using it as it can get quite 'hot' (literally it is hot because the composting process can start taking place which produces high temperatures) and can damage or kill plants.

Composts

all our composts are turned and hydrated and use an aerobic composting process to turn the original organic waste into this gardener's 'dream product'. The beauty of compost is that it is teeming with beneficial micro-organisms which will improve the health of your soil and thus make more nutrients available to your plants. Compost can be made from any organic material ie something that once lived. Our composts are sourced from a variety of agricultural waste sites around NSW.

Made right here in Mudgee by Mudgee Composting Services this is the best of the best. Like all composts it is filled to the brim with micro-organisms and nutrients that your soil will love but also made locally so that the all important goodies are local to our area and therefore tailor made for our soil.

Garden mix

this is Andrew's secret recipe and is one of our biggest sellers. You can use it to top dress your lawns and existing beds, make new beds and of course grow the most wonderful vegies. Come and see our garden beds at Living Earth to see the results in action.

Gypsum

a natural material sourced from mines at Bourke and is ideal for our clay soils. It is a clay breaker and allows the plant roots to penetrate through the spaces.

Lucerne Hay

available in small (approx 30 kg) or large bales (approx 400 kgs). This is prime Lucerne hay sourced from farmers who have had rain whilst the hay is on the ground. Unusable for stock feed as the decomposition process has already started, it is perfect for gardens.

Compost Tumble Bins

this is the bin we use for our excess household waste. Having used the bins that sit on the ground unsuccessfully I was initially sceptical about this product. However its design means that when you tumble the compost it is broken up by the central bar and gets plenty of oxygen incorporated into the mix. As long as you add enough water to keep the mixture moist I have found it works well. I am not very scientific about keeping my carbon nitrogen ratios correct but still seem to have great success with aerobic composting in this tumbler. I do leave a little of my old compost in the bin as a starter for the next load. If my bin isn't heating up enough I add a shovel full or two of fresh grass clippings to get things moving.

Worm Farms

we have had worm farms for over 10 years, and process our household organic waste and also, in a separate farm, our dogs' poo! Having used both the rectangular and round models we recommend the Can-O-Worms. We can supply the worm farm with or without worms. Please note that ordinary earthworms will not survive in a worm farm and you do need to buy the appropriate compost worms which will cope with the organic matter you feed them.
